Research Fellow & Lead Researcher: DIGITAX

Salary:  £69,594 to £98,126 per annum
Initial appointment will be in the above range per annum (depending on experience)

The Institute of Development Studies is a leading global institution for research, teaching and learning, and communications and impact on international development, based at the University of Sussex campus in Brighton, UK.

The International Centre for Tax and Development (ICTD) at IDS is a growing global policy research network dedicated to improving the quality of tax policy and administration in developing countries.

ICTD is seeking a Lead Researcher for a three-year research programme funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to investigate (a) the consequences of alternative methods of taxing digital financial services (DFS) in low income countries and (b) how DFS platforms, the use of digital ID, and technology more broadly, can contribute effectively to broadening the tax base and improving collection efficiency and equity. 

Applicants will an international reputation in their field and have a PhD, preferably in economics, finance, political science, or a related field, along with an understanding of the technology and policies of digital financial services, digital identification, and/or financial inclusion. Familiarity with issues of financial services and digital ID in low income countries and for low-income populations, and an understanding of tax policy and administration in low income countries is also essential. Experience in successfully leading large externally funded research projects and extensive experience of quantitative research are also required.
